Wonders of Vietnam

Vietnam sits at the top of my bucket list—mainly because my stomach has excellent taste. I went for the pho, stayed for the pho-tographs. I was especially psyched to see Hang En Cave and, yes, sleep in a cavern like a slightly panicked mole. That three-day trek felt less like a hike and more like an audition for a survival comedy.

Picture me wading through waist‑high rivers, performing an awkward river dance while trying not to lose my shoes to the current. Mud became my new pedicure—gritty, free, and surprisingly stubborn. I was leech free, but others, leeches treated them like an all‑inclusive buffet, and mosquitoes RSVP’d by the hundreds. Humidity clung to me like an overenthusiastic travel buddy. Sweat beads trickling down the tip of my nose.

Yet between the dramatic mud slides and the uninvited insect chorus, there were moments of pure, wide‑eyed joy. The rugged trail handed me slices of wild beauty like souvenirs—misty valleys, jaw‑dropping rock faces, and a cave so enormous it could house my ego comfortably. I felt a deep, grateful grin well up: here I was, gloriously out of my element and part of something enormous.

This is the travel tale I trot out whenever someone asks about Vietnam. It’s equal parts food obsession, minor indignities, and awe—basically a perfect recipe for an unforgettable adventure.
